Position of Attention, At Ease and Stand Easy

Command Sedia(Attention)
Drill Movement
  • At the command, move both arms to the side of the body simultaneously with the raising of the left knee.
  • For both arms, straightened (upper arm, forearm and wrist are flushed straight, alongside the thigh bone keeping them straight, with the thumb in the centre of the thigh or by the seam line of the trousers), clench fists, thumbs facing forward, covering ‘hole’ and all five fingers touching the thigh.
  • With the right leg remain straight and anchored to the ground, raise the left knee up to 90° with the thigh perpendicular to body, shin parallel to the body and the knee bent, feet pointing naturally downwards.
  • Then drive the left heel to strike the ground, just beside the right heel forming a 30° angle between the two feet with the heels touching each other.
  • The whole movement is completed sharply and forcefully.
Common Faults
  • The shoulders are slouched.
  • Roving eyes.
  • Bending of the wrists and failing to keep the arms close to the body.
  • Feet or body not square to the front.
  • Heels do not touch each other.
  • Feet turn out more than 30°.

Command Senang Diri(At ease)
Drill Movement
  • At the command, move both arms to the back of the body simultaneously with the raising of the left knee.
  • For both arms, straighten out fingers, in closed manner (as in saluting), and arms. Rest both hands in line with vertical centre of the body with the left palm over back of the right palm, with the right thumb crossed over the left and pull back shoulders to the broadest point.
  • With the right leg remaining straight and anchored to the ground, raise the left knee up to 90º with the thigh perpendicular to the body, shin parallel to the body and the knee bent, feet pointing naturally downwards.
  • Then drive the left heel to strike the ground, shoulder-width apart from the right heel.
Common Faults
  • Bending of the wrist when moving.
  • Allowing the arms to bend or to leave the body when going behind the back.
  • Moving of the right foot.
  • Left foot not at the correct angle to the right foot.

Command Ke Belakang Pusing(About turn)
Drill Movement
  • Using the left leg and pivoting on the right, turn the body 180º to the right. Straighten both legs after the first movements.
  • Then, raise the left knee to a right angle with the thigh perpendicular to the body, shin parallel to the body and feet pointing naturally downwards.
  • Lastly, drive the left heel to strike the ground, just beside the right heel in an attention position.
Common Faults
  • Weight not being on the forward foot in the first movement.
  • Not making a full turn with body and shoulders in the first movement.
  • Moving the arms, particularly during the second movement.
  • Bending the waist during the second movement.
  • Legs not lifted up high enough such that the thigh is parallel to the ground.
  • Calf not perpendicular to the thigh.

  • Raise the left/right knee to a 90º with the thigh perpendicular to the body, shin parallel to the body and feet pointing naturally downwards.
  • Landing on the ball of the foot, place the left/right foot shoulder width apart from the right/left foot.
  • Then, raise the right/left knee and bring the right/left foot just beside the left/right foot.
  • Shift to the left/right by alternating left and right leg movements.
  • Each pace is shoulder-width length.
  • Repeat the movement for both legs and at the last count, drive the heel to strike the ground, just beside the other heel.
Common Faults
  • Not moving together as a squad (Dressing)
  • Hands moving away from the body.

Saluting to the front

Command Ke Hadapan Hormat(Salute to the front)
Drill Movement
  • Raise the right arm up with fingers straightened and bring the middle finger to touch the tip of the right eyebrow (or spectacles, for the bespectacled) via the shortest route.
  • The upper right arm should be perpendicular to the body. The forearm, palm and fingers should be flushed straight.
  • Tilt the hand slightly so that the bottom of the palm and the thumb is not visible from the front.
Common Faults
  • Upper arm not horizontal and parallel to the ground.
  • Outer edge of the hand is not turned slightly downwards.

  • Return to the attention position by returning the right hand back to the sides of the body.

Sizing

Command Yang tinggi ke kanan, rendah ke kiri, dalam satu barisan paras(Tallest on the right, shortest on the left, in single rank, size)
Drill Movement
  • The squad turns to their right and breaks off. (Keluar baris)
  • Everyone in the squad/contingent will then form a single rank in one straight row, shoulder to shoulder, with the tallest person on their right and the shortest person on their left, standing in attention position.

  • Sluggish movement.

Drill Movement
  • Starting from the tallest person standing on the right, each person will number off ‘Satu’ or ‘Dua’ alternately.
  • The shortest person standing on the left will add ‘Sir’, ‘Ma’am’ or ‘IC’ after numbering off his/her number.
Common Faults
  • Numbering slowly or not in running order due to lack of alertness.

Drill Movement
  • Odd numbers will pace a step forward whereas even numbers will pace a step backwards.
  • The first step would be taken with the left foot and the right foot would be lifted up with the thigh parallel to the ground and calf perpendicular to the thigh and driven to the ground with the ball and heel of the foot reaching the ground at the same time.
Common Faults
  • Banging not synchronized.
  • Legs not lifted up high enough such that the thigh is parallel to the ground.
  • The calf not perpendicular to the thigh.
  • Different lengths of pace.
Timing 1-Bang
Command Orang Yang Di Sebelah Kanan Diam, Nombor Ganjil Ke Kanan, Nombor Genap Ke Kiri, Barisan Ke Kanan Dan Ke Kiri Pusing(Right marker remains still, odd numbers to the right, even numbers to the left, turn)
Drill Movement
  • Right marker will remain at attention position.
  • Odd numbers will do a static turning to the right while even numbers will do a static turning to the left.
Timing 1-Bang
Command Jadikan Tiga/Dua Barisan Cepat Jalan(Form three/two ranks on quick march)
Drill Movement
  • Everyone, except the right marker will quick march to their position, halt, turn left automatically and remain at attention independent of one another.
  • To form a squad, each rank is made up by three rows, i.e. 1, 2 and 3, with 1 being the front most row and 3 being the last row.
  • The odd numbers will be doing a 1-3-2 forming up.
  • The even numbers will be doing a 2-3-1 forming up.
  • This is to achieve a concave squad/contingent formation.
Common Faults
  • Forming up at the wrong position.
Timing Timer will continue quick march timing until the last person marches into position.

Dressing

Command Ke Kanan Lurus(Right dressing)
Drill Movement
  • At the command, the right marker’s column will raise their right arms forward (with thumb facing up) and the first rank will raise their right arms to the right (with thumbs facing front).
  • Everyone, except the right marker’s column, will also turn their heads 45ºs to the right.
  • If there is insufficient space, right marker’s column and first rank will raise their arms to the right and back of the shoulders of the person to their front and right respectively.
  • Thereafter, everyone will do a bang with their left leg and shuffle their feet to take dressing. The right marker’s column will take dressing of 1 arm 6 inches from the person in front forward in line with the back of the hand facing right. Knuckles of the closed hand should be 6 inches from the shoulder of the man in front.
  • The first rank will take dressing of 1 arm length by lifting their right arm to the side with the fist clenched. Knuckles should touch the left arm of the man to their right, keeping the back of hand facing upwards. However, if the person on right is taller, right arm should be raised to shoulder level.
  • Correct dressing by shuffling the feet, whilst body remains upright, until the chin of the alternate person on the right can be seen by glancing out of the corner of eye.
  • When everyone has taken dressing accordingly, the shuffling will stop.
  • The right marker will not do any arm or head movement throughout the execution of the command.
  • Shuffling of feet should be executed even if originally in the correct position.
  • Centre and rear ranks are to ensure that they are in straight rows by aligning themselves to the person in front of them and to their right.
Common Faults
  • Sluggish movement.
  • Not looking up or square to the right.
  • Shoulder inclined to the back.
  • Craning forearm.
  • Not keeping the shoulders square to the front.
  • Unnecessary movement and shuffling.
  • Looking downwards.

Drill Movement
  • Turn head sharply to the front.
  • At the same time, return to the attention position by returning the right hand back to the side of the body, keeping both arms straight.

  • The first and last rank takes 1 step forward and backward respectively.

  • The rear rank takes a step backwards. Pivoting from the ball of the foot to heel, poising the body forward and the knees braced. Similarly, bending the right knee and bang.
  • Everyone, except the right marker’s column, will turn their head 45ºs to the right. The first rank will raise right arms to the right. If there is insufficient space, the first rank will raise arms to the back of the shoulder of the person on the right.

Marching & Halting in Quick Time

Command Cepat Jalan(Quick March)
Drill Movement
  • Begin marching with the left foot.
  • March by taking a step forward with the left foot, swinging the right arm forward like a pendulum until it is perpendicular to the body and the left arm backward till it is about 45º to the body, coordinating with the opposite leg.
  • The legs should be kicked straight forward. Each step is taken with the heel striking and digging the ground first.
  • Continue marching forward by alternating with the right foot.
Common Faults
  • Stepping a pace of more or less than 30 inches (75 cm).
  • Not keeping the arms, wrists and hands straight.
  • Not pulling the arm hard enough backwards.
  • Allowing the foot to come into contact with the ground with the knee bent.
  • Not swinging the arm in a straight line from front to rear.

Note Before the command is given, Dari Kiri (Left)/Kanan (Right)/Tengah (Centre) should be given. E.g. Dari Kiri, Cepat Jalan ‘Dari Kiri/Kanan’ is given when the squad is facing the left or right. If ‘Dari Kiri’ is given, dressing should be checked by taking reference to the leading row and the rank on the left. If ‘Dari Kanan’ is given, dressing should be checked by taking reference to the leading row and the rank on the right. ‘Dari Tengah’ is given when the squad is facing the front. Reference should be taken to the leading rank and the row in the middle.
Command Berhenti(Halt)
Drill Movement
  • The command will be given when the left heel strikes the ground.
  • At the timing ‘check’, take one step forward with the right foot.
  • At the timing ‘1’, take one foot forward with the left foot. Then, bring the arms to the sides in a ‘scissors cut action’ and lift up the right leg simultaneously, drive it to the ground to assume the position of attention.
Common Faults
  • Bending at the waist when “bending the right knee”.
  • Exaggerating the movement of the right arm when “bending the right knee”.
  • Lack of “scissors cut action”.
  • Taking 2 steps instead of one step forward after the command is given.
  • Incorrect balance on completion of halt.

Drill Movement
  • At the command, raise the left knee with the thigh perpendicular to the body, shin parallel to the body and feet pointing naturally downwards.
  • Landing on the ball of the foot, place the left foot beside the right foot without driving it to the ground.
  • As the toe comes to the ground, start to raise the right knee in a similar manner.
  • Then, repeat the same movement with the right leg.
  • This is done when the squad is static.
Common Faults
  • Moving around.
  • Increasing the rate of marching.
  • Arms not locked.
  • Stamping not tapping.

  • At the timing “check”, the left foot will land on the ground, right knee raise then drive the right foot to the ground.
  • Upon driving the right leg to the ground, shoot the left foot forward and march a pace of about 30 inches swinging the right arm forward and left arm backwards.
  • Continue marching in quick time.

  • The command will be given when the left heel strikes the ground.

  • At the timing “1”, form a T-shape with the left foot. The right toecap is facing the left insole.
  • At the timing “2”, form an L-shape with the right foot at the heels.
  • At the timing “3”, form a V-shape with the left foot as standing at attention.
  • Now, having turned 180º, bang with the right leg before resuming quick march by shooting out the left leg forward.
Common Faults
  • Not turning through 90º in the first two movements.

  • Given over one complete pace.
  • The inner man of the leading rank/file will change direction through 90 degrees.

  • The inner man takes as small steps as possible while those on his outer takes larger steps to accommodate.
Common Faults
  • Ranks not being in line.
  • Marker deviating from the pivot point.

  • At the timing ‘turn’, do a static about turn before resuming quick march, beginning with the left leg.

  • Maintain arm swing, the right arm forward like a pendulum until it is perpendicular to the body and left arm backward till it is about 45º to the body, coordinating with the opposite leg throughout the execution of the command.
  • The rightmost person of the leading rank will remain in quick march, with head still facing forward.
  • If the right rank or file has a blank space, the man on the left rank or file will march diagonally to his/her right when the command is given to cover up the space.
  • After the introductory part of the ‘eyes front’ command is given, he/she will move back to the original position.
Common Faults
  • Shortening the length of pace and losing balance and thus direction.
  • Leaning back.
  • Not looking upwards and at the object of the eyes right.
