First Aid

Hyperventilation results from too many breaths in a period of time or breathing too deeply, and may result in tingling of the hands or feet and a sense of dizziness or lightheadedness. To treat someone who is hyperventilating, encourage him or her to breathe normally. Placing a paper bag over the person's mouth and nose may help the person slow his or her breathing by filling the lungs with carbon dioxide from the expelled breath.
