First Aid
The Choking Child

To aid a child who is choking, sit on a chair. Hold the child face-down across your lap, with his or her upper trunk hanging over the side of your knees. Thump the child firmly but gently four times on the middle of the back between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand.

A baby or very small child may be held by the ankles, head down. Thump the child's back more gently than you would an adult's, but hard enough to dislodge the blockage.
