Returning and Drawing of Baton

Command Keluarkan Chota, Rehatkan Diri(Draw baton, stand easy)
Drill Movement
  • At the timing “1”, turn the body and head to face 45º to the left.
  • At the second timing of “1”, start removing the baton in the holder with both hands and pass to the left hand. There should be no movement by the timing “8”.
  • Throughout the movement, the baton should not be seen from the front view.
  • At the timing cut, return quickly to stand easy. The left hand should be holding the baton in a “spray can” hand-grip while straightening the fingers of the right hand. Rest palm in line with vertical center of the body with the right hand palm over left hand which is gripping the baton.

Drill Movement
  • At the timing “1”, turn the body and head to face 45º to the left.
  • At the second timing of “1”, start slotting the baton into the holder with both hands and pass to the left hand. There should be no movement by the timing “8”.
  • Throughout the movement, the baton should not be seen from the front view.
  • At the timing cut, return quickly to stand easy. For both arms, straighten out fingers, in closed manner (like saluting), and arms. Rest palm in line with vertical center of the body with the left hand palm over right hand back of palm and pull back shoulders to broadest point.

Position of Attention, At Ease and Stand Easy

Drill Movement
  • The execution of this drill is similar to basic attention, with exception of the left arm movement.
  • For attention position in baton drill, bring the baton under the left armpit so that it is perpendicular to the body.
  • Left elbow to press towards the side of the body.
  • First joint of the forefinger of the left hand press the knob of the baton, thumb straight on the left, pointing to the front, and the remaining three fingers together curl inwards around the handle of the baton so that the palm of the left hand faces upwards.
  • The tip of the baton should be on the same plane with the back of the body and left arm.
  • At the same time, the left leg will be raised to right angles with the toes pointing downwards.
  • Drive the left foot to strike the ground just beside the right foot.

Drill Movement
  • The execution of this drill is similar to basic stand at ease, with exception of the left arm movement.
  • For stand at ease position in baton drill, the baton is brought to the back by pivoting the left arm downwards on the elbow.
  • First joint of the forefinger of the left hand underneath the knob of the baton, thumb on the right; straight pointing downwards, and the remaining three fingers together grasping and curling around the handle of the baton on the left.
  • Both elbows straight and the baton rest on the left arm.
  • Rest both hands in line with vertical center of the body with the right hand palm over left hand which is gripping the baton. Pull back shoulders to broadest point.
  • Drive the left foot to strike the ground to shoulder width apart from the right foot.

  • Relax the body and droop the shoulder.
Common Faults
  • Moving the feet.
  • Movement of body other than drooping shoulder.

  • At the command, pivot the right arm on the elbow, do a clenched fist with thumb behind fingers to the left side of the chest, via the shortest route.
  • Bring the right arm to the chest and shift the thumb behind the fingers.
  • Ensure the right thumb is hidden from view.

  • Bring the right arm to the chest and shift the thumb behind the fingers.
  • Ensure the right thumb is hidden from view.

Note Saluting to the front with baton is normally done during the ceremonial parade and at the halt only. In all other occasions, individual will salute with the right hand with the baton under the left armpit at the halt or on the march. This also applies to the salute to the left or right.

  • At the timing ‘1’, use the right hand to place the baton under the left armpit, while still maintaining the grip.
  • The left hand should simultaneously pivot up to support the baton with an open palm and fingers naturally straightened.
